How strong are you really?

Why lower body and upper body strength matter more than most people realise

Your legs help you get out of bed, stand up from a chair, walk safely, climb stairs, carry groceries, and catch your balance when you lose your footing. Your upper body helps you push, lift, carry, and catch yourself in a fall.

Here is the part that tends to surprise people. Losing muscle size and losing muscle strength are not the same thing, and strength disappears faster. How to perform it correctly
What you need: A sturdy, armless chair (a standard test chair is about 17 inches, or 43 cm, high) placed against a wall so it cannot slide, and a stopwatch or phone timer.
Set your position. Sit in the middle of the chair with your feet flat on the floor, shoulder-width apart, back straight, arms crossed over your chest.
Start the timer. Stand up fully until your hips and knees are straight.
Sit back down into a complete seated position, with control rather than dropping.

Using your hands: pushing on your thighs or the chair reduces the leg strength the movement actually requires

This is where accuracy matters. The original Rikli and Jones dataset was built from a study of over 7,000 adults aged 60 to 94 (Jones & Rikli, 2002), so the most scientifically defensible comparisons apply to that age range, not to people in their 30s or 40s, whatever generic online charts may claim.

Under 60? There is no peer-reviewed, age-stratified norm table for younger adults, as there is for the 60-and-over population. But a 2022 validation study in the International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy (Lein et al.) found healthy adults aged 19 to 35 averaged about 33 repetitions. If you are well under that, it is worth paying attention, even without a formal zone to place yourself in.
The number that matters most, regardless of age: research behind the test has repeatedly flagged that scoring fewer than 12 repetitions signals reduced physical function and a meaningfully elevated fall risk, a red flag that applies broadly, not just to a specific decade.
Your result is also shaped by training history, body weight, previous injuries, medical conditions, and overall activity level, so the most valuable comparison is often your own progress over time rather than the reference table.
Test 2: The push-up test
While the chair stand test measures lower-body strength, the push-up test is the classic bodyweight measure of upper-body muscular endurance, engaging the chest, shoulders, triceps, and core.
What you need: A flat, non-slip surface. Nothing else.
Standard version: Facing down, hands roughly shoulder-width apart, body in a rigid straight line from head to heels. Lower until your chest nearly touches the floor, then push back to full arm extension. That is one rep.
Modified version (commonly used by beginners of any gender to build toward the full movement): perform the same motion from a kneeling position, knees behind the hip line.
Do as many good form reps as you can before your form breaks down or you reach exhaustion.

What a low score means (and does not mean)
A lower score may suggest that your functional strength has room for improvement, but it does not automatically mean you are unhealthy. Fall risk, in particular, is influenced by many factors beyond leg strength alone: balance, vision, medications, home environment, reaction speed, and overall health. The chair stand test is one useful data point, not a complete health assessment.
The encouraging part, backed by the same ageing research, is that strength is one of the most trainable things about the human body at almost any age.
How to improve your scores
Sit-to-stand practice: rehearse the exact movement, starting with a comfortable number of reps and building up
Squats: strengthen many of the same muscles used in standing
Step-ups: build leg strength and balance using a stable platform or stairs
Resistance training: bands, dumbbells, or machines to progressively overload the muscles involved
Push-up progressions: start from an incline or the knees, then move toward full standard push-ups as strength builds
Consistency matters more than intensity. Studies on resistance training in older adults show meaningful strength gains within 8 to 12 weeks of consistent training, even starting from a low baseline.
How often to retest
These tests are most useful as progress trackers, not as one-time verdicts. Retest every 4 to 8 weeks, using the same chair, technique, and conditions each time. A change of two or more chair stands is considered a clinically meaningful improvement, so instead of asking "am I good enough," the better question is "am I improving compared with where I started?"
